Beer Soaps... Oh Yeah!

Well, it's all Amy's fault.

Yep, she started the whole challenge about soaping with booze.  Beer is big in Ireland, there's no doubt about it.  I couldn't find how many were actually sold in Ireland last year but I suspect it's lots... and lots, and lots and, probably, even more lots.

I don't beer, I never liked the taste of it at all.  But I found myself becoming very interested in beer in the last few weeks.  Again, it's all Amy's fault.  I made a beer soap and then realised how much fun it was ... from prepping the beer to actually making it.  Loved the bubbleage from the little tester soap balls I make from my trimmings, love the creaminess of the soap, just so much fun.  So I decided I'd do six beer soaps, a six pack.. geddit? I wanted to make them with only Irish beers (cos I'm in Ireland, seems fair) and I wanted them all to be a bit different.. from each other and from other beer soaps you can get out there.

So here's the first one, Lemon Nectar.  Oh I decided to call them all somethingsomethingsomething Nectar... it was the drink of the God's after all, seemed fitting.  So this is made with Beamish Irish Stout which is my hubs favourite pint and it's from Cork, which is where we want to live one day.

I decided that I'd add some extra goodies in all these soaps so all the Pure Beer soaps have colloidal oatmeal that helps to calm sensitive skin, silk that adds an extra level of luxury and either clay or Dead Sea Mud for their skin lovingness.

So Lemon Nectar is made with Beamish Irish Stout, colloidal oatmeal, tussah silk and kaolin clay with Sweet Almond & Golden Oil Oils and tons of creamy Cocoa Butter and is fragranced with my own blend of zesty citrusy May Chang and deep and earthily sexy Patchouli.  It smells incredible!!

Pics below... I'll show you the others in the next few blog posts.  This one is available for pre-order right now http://www.iamhandmade.com/ourshop/prod_1993049-Lemon-Nectar-PreOrder-Cure-Date-28-May.html.

A little something for myself

Well, I'm in the envious position of having a pretty much fully stocked store (if you want to change that situation, check us out at Soaperstar's Online Store and buy tons so I have to make more!!), I decided to make a few things for myself!!

Pretty much everyone who makes soaps and creams and all the yummy bath and body type things you can get, doesn't often get time to treat themselves and make something for just them! But I decided I needed a treat, and here they are:

All the soaps are cocoa butter based (very gentle on your skin) with our normal skin hydrating element plus added Sweet Almond Oil (can't help but make it pure luxury you know!) - the yellow ones on the right are a blend of Grapefruit & Lemongrass, the green ones are Peppermint & Spearmint and the orange ones on the left are Sweet Orange & Mandarin (the little two coloured one is a little bit of left over orange and grapefruit together).  All are scented using pure essential oils and coloured using natural micas (the green one, you'll notice, I could have mixed that in a bit better! D'oh!).

In the middle is a total experiment - handmade shampoo!!! With great hair loving goodies like Oat Protein and Panthenol (the pro Vitamin B you get in some big brand shampoo's).  I've never made a 'poo before so it was an utter experiment but it's a lovely pure white colour and a great texture (thickens up naturally overnight to a cream texture - which is good cos it sort of looked like frog spawn and pond water when I started!).  This is scented with Rosemary & Lavender essential oils - perfect for hair.

So, a few little pressies for me ... I really enjoyed making them and I hope you enjoyed having a peek at what we have in our bathroom!

If you need a gift for someone special or even yourself (and who isn't special enough to buy a gift for themselves!) check out our handcrafted luxury goatsmilk & glycerine soaps - and afterwards you can slather yourself in our Sheer Luxury Body Butter too! We're getting rave reviews back on these! Check out http://www.soaperstar.com/ for details - oh and we've got a new May special offer happening too!!!

Soaperstar Wins!

Well, I got home yesterday evening after a long hard day, and jumped online to check my emails ... and what did I find in my inbox? A fabulous email! Yes! But fabulous how? Fabulous because I'd just been told that I've won the Mr Site Website of the Month!! I was thrilled, such good news.

And, even better news... they've also asked to use my site on their sample pages, to show people how a Mr Site website can look! I am really honoured about this ... when I started out, I didn't have any idea at all how to make a website, what information I'd need, or even what to do about those funny websitey languages?? But I did know I wanted to make it myself, I knew how I wanted it to look and I wanted to be able to update it myself, whenever I needed to.

For those who don't know, Mr Site is a template driven site ... you choose a template that you like and you can input your own content on it; but you can also change almost every aspect of it to make it your own (because who wants a website that looks like everyone else's?!) and, if you learn a little HTML coding, you can certainly change a lot of the format of it.  The content is all down to you of course!!

Mr Site publish a monthly newsletter and Soaperstar will be featured in this - can't wait to see it!

Don't forget, if you like any of our fabulous Soaperstar products, check out our Soaperstar Online Store - we'll be delighted to see you!!!

Mmmm Summer sunshine... Pineapple Beach anyone?

With the hope of some fabulous Summer sun, I've added to my Summer range by making a fabulous new fruity, delicious soap - Pineapple Beach another of our luxury handcrafted goatsmilk and glycerine soaps.

To keep with the tropical theme, I've added pure Organic Coconut Oil, which has been called the healthiest oil on earth - it has incredible abilities to moisturise your skin and is particularly good with dry or mature skin.

To increase moisturisation and to give you even more fabulously soft skin, I've also added my usual skin hydrating Ecocert additive - you'll know by now this is a vital ingredient in all my soaps as it adds yet another vital luxury element.

This summery soap is fragranced with a delicious, fresh, sweet & juicy pineapple scent - for a real tropical Summer! And I've used a blend of two different natural micas, specially imported from the US, to create a true juicy pineapple colour. These micas glisten gently in this wonderful soap - perfect for those warm Summer days!

If you are interested in purchasing this truly Summery soap, check out our Soaperstar Online Store - we'll be happy to see you there!!

Happy Easter everyone!

Just a quickie to say Happy Easter to everyone! I bet you're all stuffing yourselves to the gills with chocolate today.. and why not, if there was ever a day for it, today's it! I've been off chocolate and all matter of naughty munchie type things for 12 days now .. currently now changing my addiction from chocolate to oranges! Yep, I am a freak.. so far it's not been difficult at all to be honest - I love most fruit and veg anyway (not the hugest fan of green vegetables in the main though) and I'm not a big meat eater usually (in that I do eat meat but I often only want a small portion of it).

My problem is comfort eating so I'm trying to replace that with more healthy choices without going too mad about counting calories or doing stupid stuff like weighing myself everyday.  I didn't even weigh myself at the start of this - I'm just going by how my clothes feel (they were starting to get tight which I really hate).  I'm going on hols in August and wanted to drop a bit before I went (I've a lot to drop I'm afraid but something is better than nothing right?!).

Anyway, I digress (as usual)... just wanted to say Happy Easter to all my Soaperstar's .. hope you have the best day and enjoy that choccie .. think of me whilst I have another orange!!!

Fancy treating yourself to some fabulous luxury handcrafted glycerine & goatsmilk soaps? Go no further than our online store for more details!

A new look for our blog

Well, you'll have noticed by now that we have a new look to our blog.  I had been pretty happy with the look of it up til now but I felt that it didn't really reflect Soaperstar and didn't really link in with the look of the Soaperstar website.  It was too bland, too dull really.  I spent a long time looking for something that would work for us - that'd link in with the look of the website and that would look more professional too.  I found the template we're using now and thought "that's it"... the "bubbles" in the background image are very similar to those used as the background image on our site and, well the fact that they look like bubbles makes you think of soap too! I just love the colours as well and I think the darker background gives it a more modern look.

I'm hoping that you like it and enjoy reading the blog as much as I enjoy writing it.  I know some people think "what am I going to write about" when they start blogging first (or maybe most of the time?!) but I see it as a sort of diary that tracks not only the birth and growth of Soaperstar but also the things that happen around me that go to make me who I am which, ultimately, makes Soaperstar what it is.  The longer I use this, the more I find that it helps me focus on what I want for this business and what direction I want it to take.  But that's probably another day's post!

If you'd like to make any comments about the new look, feel free to send me a comment - I'm happy to hear all views!

Irish Blog Awards 2010 - Moving into Round 2

Well, I have to say I got a very pleasant shock yesterday - having been nominated in the Pop Culture section of the Irish Blog Awards 2010 (for which I was utterly chuffed), I was reading a friends profile on Facebook where she'd posted that the Round 1 lists had been published.  I checked them on the website and I found out I am through Round 1 judging ... well, I have to admit I'm pretty thrilled.  I didn't expect to get past the nomination stage, let alone through Round 1.  Round 2 judging starts on Friday (12 March) and, from that, the list of finalists will be issued.

I just want to wish all my fellow nominees in all categories the very best of luck and thanks to the judges for their hard work also.  I am just thrilled to have gotten this far to be honest ... but how cool would it be to actually be a finalist?! I'll keep you updated!

Spring has Sprung ... Hawaiian Blossom is here!

The sun is shining and the evenings are getting longer - yes, I still have to scrape the ice off the car windscreen every morning before I go anywhere but still, the sun is shining! We have sun! It does exist after all!!! So, in celebration of the fantastic feeling of Spring in the air, I made a fabulous new soap - bright yellow sunshine with a fantastic glisten of natural mica!

We have taken the purest, highest quality goatsmilk and clear glycerine soaps (which are natural humectants - they attract moisture from the air into your skin) and added exotic Mango Butter which is rich in beta carotene and Vitamins A & E. It is highly moisturising and has excellent softening and regenerative properties, with the added bonus that it is thought be protective against UV rays. It is claimed that mango butter can help to reduce the degeneration of the skin’s cells and help to restore elasticity, so would make an excellent ingredient in products for mature skins.

To this we have added our special additional skin hydrating element which provides your skin with increased hydration and provies excellent moisturisation.

Hawaiian Blossom soap is wonderfully fragranced with the sweet exotic tropical fragrance of frangipani - this flower can be found in areas of Asia and is native to Hawaii is a stunningly beautiful white and yellow flower, with a beautiful floral fragrance. Reflecting the natural yellow and white of the Frangipani flower, we have coloured this luxury soap with tones of yellow glycerine and white goatsmilk soaps - we've also added natural mica to give a glittery sheen, reminiscent of the sun shining on moisture drops on the flowers.

This is really a luxury soap - perfect for all skin types, deeply moisturising with added ingredients to treat your skin to the quality it deserves, wonderfully coloured and deeply fragranced with an exotic floral scent .. a perfect gift to anyone you love.

The Power of Positive Thinking

I attended a training course today and the key concept behind it was the power of positive thought ... I had some thoughts about it on the train home.

We all have days where we get up in the morning and think "oh no, not another day - isn't it Friday yet already?".  But how often do we think that? Once, twice a week? More? I wonder how much that negative thought affects the rest of the day - seems to make sense that, if you start the day with a negative thought, surely the rest could go downhill after that.  How about thinking "ok, another day to wake up and do lots of things, meet people, laugh, hug my husband, love life"... it's probably a bit too touchy-feely for lots of us to accept but I'm interested in trying to adjust my thinking to see how much that positivity affects my daily life.

The theory goes that thinking positively builds confidence, improves your attitude to life, helps you cope better with the stresses and strains we encounter everyday and helps you to visualise positive outcomes - which is supposed to help you achieve your goals.

I think I'm a pretty positive person all in all but there's always room for improvement for us all! So I'm going to work on this .... think more positively, see the good side of things more, find the silver lining! I find my soaping a hugely positive project in my life - the creativity helps me release tensions and strains and the mental thought process of designing new products really challenges me and gets those synapses sparking! Working on increasing my positive thought can only help me more.  Why not join me in this ... see how it works for you.

Social Media for Starters

I have been thinking recently about a comment made by a friend of mine with regard to Soaperstar - he said "it's really an experiment in social marekting isn't it?".  In part, he's right - when I started the business, I used Facebook and Twitter socially, just as me, Celine.  Not as me, Soaperstar.  I didn't (and still don't have) a marketing budget per se - looking at what the big guys spend on marketing makes me faint! I thought "how do I get my message out there with the budget I have?".  And my answer was social media - it's free and the only investment you need to make is time and energy.  You don't need £££'s or €€€€'s or $$$$'s to use them and you can get many rewards back.

Firstly, I don't proclaim to be any sort of expert on social media but I am someone who runs a small business and is trying to use social media as a marketing tool to get the message out about my products and my love for making them.  I had a Twitter account already but barely used it - I didn't "get" Twitter.  As part of my new strategy, I decided to take a step into social media networking to build on relationships as a sales and marketing tool.. .in order to do this, I had to set up a company profile on both Twitter and Facebook.

Facebook does allow you to set up a business page as an extention of your personal profile - it's pretty easy to set up and allows you to present a company profile to people.  By inviting your existing friends and family, you can start building networks.  As I explained in a previous post, these networks can be built on by asking your existing network, ie your friends and family, to extend it by inviting their networks to join yours.  It's termed viral marketing.

However, Twitter seems to be a real mystery to people and I thought I might concentrate this post on it specifically, in terms of setting out as a small business to use it as a marketing tool.  I took my existing profile and changed the name to Soaperstar - easily done.  I added a picture as my avatar (the picture that appears beside your posts that says "this is you").  I had thought of putting up a picture of myself but I then decided to add a picture of one of my soaps instead - given this is a company profile, and the company is about soapmaking, I thought it was a great way to get an image out there and implanted on peoples' brains that Soaperstar = Soap.  I change the picture pretty regularly whenever I make a visually bright and interesting soap - another way of showcasing your products.  If you don't have a product that is visually that interesting, ie something like widgets (I'm not even sure what they are but I'm sure someone makes them), then add your logo or, as I do elsewhere, a visual representation of your company.  This the image I use, for instance, on Facebook.

It's clear and uses the same font as my company name - I don't have a logo per se, but use this image in exchange for that.

Ok, so now you have an account set up and a nice image - you've made progress.  You can also add an image to the background of your profile page - again I take a picture of my soap and tile this as my background.  This has a limited impact however, as lots of people use different programmes to access Twitter - my personal favourite being Tweetdeck.  With Tweetdeck, I'd rarely see someone's profile background picture (but I would always see their profile pic, which is why it's more important to have one).

I would always advise someone to fill out the profile page as best they can - include where you are, your name, your website address .. any information that people will find interesting about you.  In your description, think of something short and to the point.

So, now you have a profile and some pictures.  Now what? Well, you start talking to people... follow those who you know are already on Twitter, your sister or cousin or whoever.  Again, as with Facebook, work on the networks you already belong to - members of your family and friends.  You're not going to make your fortune from them however (no matter how nice they are to you!) so you need to extend beyond that but, for a first venture into the medium, it's a good start.  Ask them to introduce you to their friends.. some people may follow you just because they've recommended you.

The key to marketing on Twitter is making networks .. which basically means making friends.  If someone comes up to you in the street and says "here, buy this from me", your first reaction will be "nutter" and the second will be "no way am I buying anything from a random stranger".  However, if you know hat your friend is in business and selling something, lets say soap, and you think "Oh I need to get something for my wife for her birthday", who will you go to? Your friend who'll sell you the soap, nicely wrapped and presented, delivered to your door.  Your friend who you know has a special offer on and include a freebie or a card or something (you know this because they tweeted it a few days ago).  You're happy to deal with your friend and they're happy to get the business.   Think of Twitter like that ... building friendships.

But how do you do that, I hear you say, when you don't know anyone? You do it the same way you to anywhere else - online is no different from offline.  When you don't know someone but think they might be nice or interesting, you say "Hi, how are you, having a good day?" or something, to them.  It's not going to rock their world (but it might make them happy, sometimes a nice hello is worth it's weight in gold) but it's going to say that you're a decent nice person .. generally speaking, the reaction will be "hi, I'm fine, how are you?".  And so it starts.  Just like it does no matter where you are - yes, it feels a little awkward at the start but it does in real life too.  You cannot get to know someone without starting off with a Hello!

So now I hear you saying, "Ok, that's fine, just say hi, what next?".  What's next is keep up the conversation, or chat to others in the same way ... talk about something interesting, something they might want to talk about.  For example, imagine you're selling ski equipment - a hard sell but you could start out with a shout out to everyone saying "I've just come back from a ski holiday, it was fantastic, anyone else been on one?".  You'll no doubt get an answer or two .. ask them some questions, be interested.  Don't jump in with "oh wanna buy some equipment?".. drop the fact that you sell equipment into the conversation but don't make it the topic of the conversation.  They'll know now that you sell equipment but it doesn't mean that you're a nameless faceless person selling equipment and nothing else - you're a human being, interacting with them, being interested, being funny (hopefully!) who happens to sell ski equipment.  Keep up that conversation over time, make friends, chat when you get online and who will they go to for their ski equipment if they need any?? Their friend, who's a nice person and funny and who, handily enough, sells ski equipment.  Get it? That's the beauty of social marketing and the key to it - you have to be a person, you have to be real, you have to be YOU.  You are the company yes, but you're also a person with feelings and thoughts and opinions, not just a person selling ski equipment.  So share yourself, whilst you're sharing your business.

That's the thing to remember about social media and marketing - it's sociable! You need to interact with people, chat, talk about things, give an opinion, be yourself.  Drop in some tweets about your business in the mix, link it to what people are talking about, let them know that you sell soap or ski equipment or whatever and do it in a way that it seems to meet people's needs and wants.

I have to say that the network of friends I've made from Twitter is excellent - they are lovely people, who are funny (made me laugh til the tears came rolling down my face at times), they are caring (when I was ill recently, the number of tweets I got to see I was ok was amazing), they sometimes need help themselves... and they've also are customers of mine.  I am happy to know them all, for every reason and not just the latter.

So, if you're a small business starting out, think about your marketing strategies, your budget available to you - see what time you can offer to social media (it does take time to build up friendships, online or offline, so dropping in and out once a month isn't going to cut it, I'm afraid).  Don't be afraid to be yourself, show people that you're someone they want to get to know.  Get your brand out there via your profile and your business related tweets but don't make it just about the business - the business is you not just the brand.  I make it a rule not to follow people who ONLY post links to their business - they are offering me nothing, I don't know who they are.  Follow people and offer others something that will make them follow you.  Build your networks, and spread the good word.  You will need to give it time and energy but it will pay you dividends in the future.  And remember, it's free, it's something you can do anywhere and everywhere and it won't cost you anything! Which, as a small business, is a VERY attractive option!

I hope I've helped people out who may not understand social media or who don't "get" Twitter - it's no different from a group of friends getting together anywhere, it just means you're in different rooms, not all sitting together.  Which means that you can get your company message out anywhere and everywhere at any time of the day and there will be people there to receive that message - as long as you're participating in the network, people will take notice.

Irish Blog Awards Nomination for Soaperstar!

Well... I am tickled pink, and purple, and green and red and orange and all the colours of the rainbow! Why you say? Because the blog you're reading right now has been nominated for the Irish Blog Awards 2010 in the Pop Culture Category.

I'm just delighted.. it's a long list of nominees and I might not have the best chance in the world but hey, I really am delighted to have been nominated at all.  The awards night is being held on 27 March in Galway - I imagine that judges will short list (from the long list) and then decide the winners.  So I may never get an opportunity to wear some fancy schmancy dress on the red carpet but no matter, I'm pretty happy as it is right now!

So, the next question is, should I practice my speech?!!

Two new Soaperstar Soaps! Indian Rainforest & Lavender Champagne... bliss!

Introducing two new Soaperstar soaps! I got back to some post Christmas soaping on Saturday and made the following two soaps, I'm just adoring the fragrances used and the subtle modern colouring... here come the details!!!

Both of our new soaps, Indian Rainforest and Lavender Champagne are handcrafted luxury Goatsmilk & Glycerine soaps with added Apricot Kernel Oil for extra skin moisturisation and an additional skin hydrating factor to ensure your skin in treated with the luxury it deserves!

On the right hand side, Indian Rainforest is designed as a soap for men - it is deeply fragranced using a wonderful blend of cedarwood, giving a warm woody masculine base, alongside the deep earthy scent of patchouli, a fragrance element used in many commercial aftershaves for men. However, many women will just adore this fragrance too!

The soap is coloured using two different natural micas, a deep forest green and a lighter green gold, alongside the white goatsmilk - giving an impression of dark deep Indian Rainforest.

Our Lavender Champagne is wonderfully fragranced with our Lavender Champagne fragrance oil, a blend of uplifting lemon against a background of calming, soothing lavender.

This beautiful blend is perfectly balanced - neither scent overtakes the other, the lemon adds a wonderful freshness against the more comforting lavender. The subtle colouring is enhanced with the use of natural glistening mica - a truly modern take on a traditional theme.

I hope you enjoy both of our new soaps - both are now availalbe to purchase from our online store - just check us out at http://www.soaperstar.com/ - we'll be delighted to see you there!!!!
